The 13th World Congress of the International Association of Bioethics will be held in Edinburgh in 14 -17 June 2016. The Congress theme is Individuals, Public Interests and Public Goods: What is the contribution of bioethics?
We invite interested presenters to submit abstracts for inclusion in the congress programme. The abstract submission for all elements is now open. The deadline to submit abstracts is Friday 22th January 2016 by 17:00 (GMT).
Submission details are outlined below, and please also read the Presentation Guidelines (insert link to ) before submitting an abstract.
Congress Streams
The Congress Theme ‘Individuals, Public Interests and Public Goods: What is the contribution of bioethics’ will be explored within three major streams, each of which will run concurrently throughout the Congress:
(1) the main traditional academic stream
(2) the early career researchers (ECR) stream
(3) the Arts+Ethics stream
(1 & 2) Academic Stream and ECR Stream
The Academic and ECR streams will explore leading-edge bioethics issues through a wide variety of innovative presentations to promote a sense of dynamism at the Congress. The presentation types include Symposia, Oral presentations, Poster, 20 X 20 and Three Minute Thesis.
There are a limited and competitive number of spaces available at the Congress for presentations across a range of formats. Delegates are welcome to submit more than one abstract, but only one submission per delegate will be chosen for the final programme. The only exceptions to this will be participation in a symposium panel plus one other presentation opportunity.
(3) Arts and Ethics Call for Submissions
We are calling for contributions to the Arts+Ethics stream, which is interested in work that explores interactions and relationships between the arts, broadly understood, and bioethics (and academia). Contributions by academics, practitioners and artists relating to any aspect of ethics and the arts are welcome, but we are particularly interested in contributions that address the following:
• funding of arts/ethics collaborations;
• working across disciplines;
• body ethics and art;
• public engagement and the arts for ethic
• technology and the arts and ethics;
• global bioethics and the arts;
• public interests or public goods and
• the arts and ethics.
This Stream will be composed of three presentation elements: an Academic Element, an Exhibition Element, and a Performance Element.
Academic Element: This will include academic explorations of arts and bioethics, and delegates are invited to submit abstracts based on the presentation formats Symposia, Oral, Poster, 20×20, and 3 Minute Thesis. Please see the table below for specific requirements.
Exhibition Element: There will be an exhibition space at the Congress Centre where we invite anyone wishing to exhibit existing, new or bespoke art (sculpture, illustrations, installation, etc.) with a bioethics theme or connection.
Performance Element: We wish to present a performative element (i.e., film, theatrical performance, dance performance, etc.) during the Congress. Depending on type and needs, this would run during the day at the Congress Centre or in the evening at an external site. Filmmakers, theatrical performers, dancers, etc., wishing to contribute should submit an abstract.

Presenters are asked to submit abstracts under the following themes:
• Arts+Ethics
• Global Bioethics
• Individuals, Public Interests and Public Goods
• Public Health, Ethics and Law
Review Process
All abstracts will be peer reviewed by members of the Organising Committee and a carefully selected team of international reviewers. Assessments will be anonymous and managed via an electronic points-based system focussed on (1) originality, (2) significance, (3) rigour and (4) fit to conference themes. The entire process will be overseen by the Organising Committee, which has final authority on decisions. The Organising Committee reserves the right to propose an alternative format of presentation to that suggested by applicants.
Notification of Acceptance
Prior to the end of the early bird rate for registration, authors will be informed whether their abstract has been successful or not.
Abstract Submission Guidelines & Templates
Listed below are abstract submission guidelines and templates for each presentation type. Please also review the presentation guidelines before submitting and abstract.
All abstracts must be submitted in either Word or PDF format using the appropriate submission template via the online abstract submission portal by Friday 22 January 2016, by 17:00 (GMT). Any abstracts received after this date will not be accepted.
Please ensure that the appropriate template is used for your submission. Failure to do so may result in your abstract submission being rejected.
IMPORTANT: Do not include your name, institution or position on your abstract submission document, this information will be captured in the online abstract submission portal and will be kept confidential during the abstract review process.

• Provide the Title of the abstract (max 30 words)
• Choose a presentation type (details listed below on table)

• Provide Abstract Authors, positions and presenting author/primary contact (A minimum of 4 authors and maximum of 5 authors are permitted)

Abstract Templates
Symposia
250 word abstract limit
Symposia are carefully-constructed, themed sessions of interrelating papers. Each symposia should consist of a Chair (who can also be panel speaker) and between 3- 4 panel speakers, one of which must be PhD/ECR. Symposia should be as discursive as possible. The introduction and presentation portion of the event is to last for 40-45 minutes. Each speaker will have 10-12 minutes for their respective oral presentations, followed by 40-45 minutes of questions and discussion from the audience. There must be an overarching theme between all of the papers submitted which corresponds with the Congress themes. The Chair is expected to liaise closely with all speakers before the event and to ensure coordination of content and focus of the symposium.

• Abstract (max 250 words) must include: Symposium Description of the Research Problem, Format/Methodology, Originality, Conclusion and Link between different papers i.e. overarching theme.
• Each paper featuring in the symposia should also be included with an abstract of 150 words. Indicate which abstract is PhD/ECR.

Oral Presentation

Presentations consist of individual presentations which will be grouped under one of the Congress themes. These will take place during parallel sessions. Presentations must relate to one or more of the following themes: Individuals, Public Interests and Public Goods; Global Bioethics; Public Health, Ethics and Law; Arts and Ethics Speakers must focus on an original contribution to knowledge that is both significant and rigorous.
10 minutes per presenter with 4 minutes discussion each.

Three Minute Thesis
These sessions focus on rapid pitch of, and response to, Big Ideas. The aim is to refine and develop thinking while receiving constructive feedback in an informal setting. Participants will have exactly 3 minutes to explain their Big Idea including: Research Problem, Methodology, Originality and Conclusion.
2 minutes will be offered for feedback from panel experts.

20 X 20

Participants will have the opportunity to present 20 slides and will have 20 seconds per slide (approx. 7 minutes per presentation). Rapid response will be provided from the audience.
