President Fang Fangping leads multidisciplinary team to visit Westmead Hospital, University of Sydney

From October 27 to 30, the delegation led by Chen Fangping, Yuan Hong, and Zhu Sunhong, who are the leaders of the Third Xiangya Hospital, led a 14-member delegation including blood, cardiovascular, minimally invasive, and transplantation, and related management departments. At Westmead Hospital, University of Sydney, Australia, the delegation conducted in-depth exchanges with related disciplines of the hospital and reached a number of cooperation intentions.

The delegation was led by Professor Jeremy Chapman, Head of the Expert Group on Human Cell, Tissue and Organ Transplantation of the World Health Organization, Professor of Clinical Medicine and Cancer at Westmead Hospital; current Chairman of the International Transplantation Association; Professor Philip O'Connell, Director of Organ Transplantation, Westmead Hospital; Westmead Hospital Prof. Wayne Hawthorne, Head of the Pancreas and Islet Transplantation Department, and Dr. Yi S. Nan, visiting professor of our hospital, warmly welcomed them.

The delegation first had a formal meeting with Westmead Hospital. President Chen Fangping briefed the participants on the establishment and development of the Third Xiangya Hospital, and focused on the results of the discipline construction led by the Department of Organ Transplantation, Minimally Invasive Surgery, and Health Management. Prof. Jeremy Chapman briefed the delegation on the overview of Westmead Hospital and the clinical operation mode. The two sides had a lively discussion on hospital discipline construction, personnel training and medical education. At the meeting, President Chen Fangping and Professor Jeremy Chapman signed the “Supplementary Agreement for Cooperation between Xiangya Third Hospital of Central South University and Westmead Hospital of Australia”. Based on the letter of intent signed last year, the team added nursing and management teams to the Westmead Hospital for further study. Such important contents further elaborated the agreement terms such as academic cooperation, academic exchanges, and personnel exchanges.

In the following days of visits, various disciplines carried out in-depth exchanges with the blood, cardiovascular, minimally invasive, and transplantation disciplines of Westmead Hospital.

Professor Chen Fangping, Professor Liu Jing, and Director of Department of Hematology, Dr. Lu Ben, accompanied by Professor David Gottileb, Director of Department of Hematology, Westmead Hospital, participated in case discussions of the department, investigated the Cell Therapy Center, and conducted academic exchanges at the Institute. Dr. Lu Ben gave a lecture entitled "Sepsis and Blood System Diseases", which caused high interest among Australian scholars. The two sides reached a clear cooperation intention in clinical research on the application of new technologies in cell therapy to treat sepsis.

Professor Yuanhong Hong, dean of the Department of Cardiology, Professor Jiang Weihong, and Dr. Cai Jingjing visited the Cardiac Catheterization Room and Ward of Westmead Hospital to gain in-depth understanding of the hospital's intervention volume and clinical level, and with Professor James Chong and Professor Eddy Kizana on clinical research. We have conducted fruitful exchanges in such areas as translational medicine, and conducted meticulous and in-depth discussions on how to conduct research on the vascular disease research team and complement each other's advantages, and we have tentatively drawn up a feasible cooperation plan.

Zhu Sunhong, Associate Dean, Puwai Sanke Zhu Liyong, Physician Li Pengzhou, Professor Henry Pleass and Professor Vincent Lam, general surgery of Westmead Hospital, and others introduced the minimally invasive weight reduction surgery, domestic robotic surgery research and clinical application in our hospital. The two sides reached an initial agreement on the cooperation of minimally invasive weight reduction surgery and Da Vinci robotic surgery. The two young doctors also participated in the clinical rounds and case discussions of general surgery at Westmead Hospital and observed minimally invasive surgery.

Prof. Wang Wei, director of the Radiology Department, had an in-depth exchange with xenotransplantation and Professor Philip O'Connell, and will continue to visit Westmead for one month. Prof. Ming Yingzi, Director of the Transplantation Division, participated in two rounds of ward rounds and case discussions in the Westmead Transplant Division, and sat down with the Philip O'Connell to attend a transplant clinic. In accompanied by Prof. Henry, the director of the transplantation department, she also observed the organ transplant operation and discussed the details of the operation. After the operation, Professor Ming also rushed to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital to view surgical patients and discussed with the director of the hospital's surgery the issues related to transplant infection and the cooperation projects the two parties intend to carry out.

Director Yang Guoping of the Ministry of Scientific Research, Director Hu Ping of the Ministry of Medical Affairs, Deputy Director of the Human Resources Department and Liu Xinchun, Director of the Talent Office, had an in-depth exchange with related management departments of the Westmead Hospital, and learned about the new model of research management, inpatient management, and medical ethics review of the hospital. Prof. Fang Fangping and his party also visited the newly completed WMS (Weastmead Millennium Institute) of Westmead Hospital. During the visit, the delegation visited the Wang Yahua, Gao Feng and other clinicians sent by the Third Xiangya Hospital to study at Weastmead Hospital and encouraged them to cherish their opportunities and study hard.
